Obsidian

Obsidian gemstone beads are formed from natural volcanic glass created when silica-rich lava cools rapidly with little time for crystals to develop. Best known for its deep black, glass-like appearance, obsidian can also display natural variations and optical effects, including smoky areas, mahogany-brown patterning, golden or silvery sheen, and the colorful iridescence seen in rainbow obsidian. Its smooth surface and rich coloration give obsidian a distinctive presence in both understated and highly detailed jewelry designs.

With a Mohs hardness of approximately 5 to 5.5, obsidian requires more care than harder quartz-based gemstones and can chip or scratch if struck against hard surfaces. Obsidian gemstone bead strands work well in bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and layered designs and pair beautifully with metals, wood, glass, and contrasting gemstones. Avoid abrasive cleaners and hard impacts to help protect the polished surface. In crystal and gemstone traditions, obsidian is often associated with grounding, protection, clarity, and self-reflection.
